3 Highly Effective Natural Ways to Stop Thinning Hair

No matter your age, you know your hair is just not as thick or healthy as it was when you were younger. Whether you think your thinning is due to post-pregnancy shedding, excessive stress, a lacklustre diet, or the natural hormonal fluctuations of perimenopause or menopause, hey it’s OK! There are several effective steps you can take to reduce the thinning and get healthier hair. And (bonus!) all of these steps will fit easily into your daily routine and come highly recommended by dermatologists or hair experts.
Yep, hair loss can be a natural part of the aging process. In an interview with Preventiondermatologist Dr. Doris Day confirms, “As we age, overall hair density changes and individual strands become finer.” But as with so many signs of aging, eating a healthy diet and changing up your daily routine can make a big difference in the way your hair looks and feels as you age.

Step 1: Eat Your Vegetables (and Fish, Nuts & Beans)!

Here’s just one more reason to eat better. Hair follicles need good sources of proteinironzinc, and vitamin B12. A diet rich in leafy greens, nuts, beans, and fish will give hair strands the vitamins and minerals they need to thrive. Think shiny, healthy, thick hair!

Step 2: Boost Blood Flow to the Scalp

Give yourself regular scalp massages. Just like exfoliating your skin promotes cell turnover, scalp massages improve blood flow to the scalp. This boosted circulation will help bring all those good nutrients you just added to your diet (ahem, see step 1) to your hair follicles.
The truth is that even when you do eat healthier, not all of those good nutrients may be getting to your follicles. That’s because hair and nails are considered by your body to be “non-essential”, so they’re usually the last areas to get nutrition. Scalp massages are a great way to bring more of that nutrient-rich blood to your hair.

Step 3: Take Supplements

Consider Viviscal supplements, which contain naturally derived ingredients that nourish hair follicles from within to prevent thinning. Viviscal works in line with your natural hair growth cycle. New York–based dermatologist Joshua Zeichner says that the combination of marine extracts, vitamin C, zinc, biotin, and niacin in Viviscal “encourages the body to produce healthier, thicker strands.”
In a recent post, Harper’s Bazaar editors named Viviscal one of their 12 supplements to take for shiny healthy hair, saying, “There’s a reason you’ll find these strand-strengthening tablets in the possession of star stylists and A-list celebrities…” The blend of deep-sea marine extracts, horsetail plant extract, and vitamin C “prevent the dry, frazzled ends that force you to chop your length off too soon.”
