What’s the best way to apply and use shampoo and conditioner?

Let’s face it, when it comes to having a good hair day getting the shampoo and conditioning part right is key. From using too much product on hair to not fully cleansing those tresses, there’s a lot that can go wrong!
We’ve checked in with leading hair stylist Richard Kavanagh, author of ‘Love Your Hair’, for some top tips on the do’s and don’ts of hair washing!

  • Make sure that hair is dripping wet before applying shampoo.
  • Rub shampoo, approximately 5ml (1 teaspoon), between your palms before distributing it           through your hair from ends to roots.
  • Give your scalp a good massage with the tips of your fingers to really get hair clean, and            increase circulation to the scalp.

  • Once shampoo is applied, avoid scrunching and rubbing hair together like laundry as this can     cause cuticle damage, causing hair to look dull.

  • Squeeze excess water out of your hair before applying conditioner. When it comes to               conditioning, unlike shampooing, the less water left in your hair the better.
  • Apply the majority of your conditioner to the driest parts that need it the most i.e. the tips.
  • Leave conditioner in for a few minutes before rinsing really thoroughly throughout.

  • Leave any conditioner in as this can give hair a dull appearance and make it more difficult to style.

Towel drying:

  • Gently squeeze water out of hair in the same way that you would delicate laundry.

  • Roughly rub dry with a towel as this can cause the hair’s cuticle layer, causing it to chip and break.

And voila, there you have it the perfect hair care routine!
