Best regimen for healthy hair in 2018

Beautiful, healthy hair doesn’t just magically happen overnight. If you want healthier hair, you have to commit to some healthy habits first. Luckily, with the new year on the horizon, it’s the perfect time to make some hair care resolutions! Read on to learn how to have healthy hair in the new year by resolving to follow these easy hair care tips.

2019 Hair Care Routine for Healthy, Thick Hair

Resolution 1: Skip Some Washes

Washing your hair every day can leave it dry, brittle, and prone to breakage. Lengthen the time between washes by using a dry shampoo or pull hair loosely into a bun. Hint: tightly pulled hairstyles can cause more damage (see resolution 5 below). When you do wash your hair, opt for a gentle shampoo that cleanses the hair without stripping it of its natural protective oils.

Resolution 2: Invest in a Silk Pillowcase

When you sleep on a cotton pillowcase, the rough surface causes friction against your strands. This friction can lead to damage. Plus, the porous cotton fibres can absorb moisture from your hair. Switch to a slippery silk pillowcase to prevent nighttime friction and help keep your locks moisturised.

Resolution 3: Embrace Your Natural Texture

Blow dryers, curling irons, flat irons, and all the other high-heat hair tools we use to change our natural hair texture can cause damage. This can be especially true in winter when hair is usually drier and more fragile. Whenever you can, air-dry your hair and avoid styling with hot tools.

Resolution 4: Damage Control

When you do use heat tools on your hair, always use a heat protectant. These products come in oils, sprays, and creams for different hair types. But the function is essentially the same: to protect hair from damage when using hot tools. Never curl or straighten your hair without using a heat protectant first!

Resolution 5: Rotate Your Hairstyles

We love a sleek topknot or ponytail to disguise oily hair in between washes. Unfortunately, wearing your hair in the same style every day — especially a tightly pulled style — can cause breakage. Switch your look regularly, alternating buns, braids and ponytails. And change their position on your head to prevent excess stress on one part of your scalp.

Resolution 6: Regular Trims

Even if you’re trying to grow out your hair, you should be visiting your stylist every 6-8 weeks for a trim. Why? Trims remove split ends before they can spread up the hair shaft, causing breakage. If you want longer, healthier hair then you want to avoid breakage at all costs! Regular trims will keep your hair healthy and strong.

Resolution 7: Take Your Vitamins

Healthy hair starts with a healthy body. When we don’t get enough nutrients, our bodies may reroute the nutrients we do get to our vital organs instead of making them available to hair follicles. The result? Hair growth may slow and thinning can occur. In fact, in clinical studies, deficiencies of vitamins and minerals like iron have been linked with hair loss in women. While we encourage you to eat a diet rich in hair-healthy foods, you may also find it helpful to take a nutritional supplement like Viviscal to be sure you’re getting the nutrients you need to promote existing hair growth.*

Resolution 8: Protect Against the Elements

You protect your skin from winter’s cold and summer’s sun, but are you also protecting your hair? Each season brings new challenges for hair care. For healthy hair, all year round, be sure to protect your hair from the elements.
In the winter, moisture is key. Invest in a moisturising hair mask or deep conditioning treatment and apply once a week. In the summer, protect hair from damaging UVA and UVB rays by wearing a wide-brimmed hat.
If you’re overwhelmed by this list, try to incorporate a new healthy habit during each month of 2018. By the end of the year, your hair could be so much healthier!
