You probably already know that heat can be highly damaging for hair, especially if your hair is fine, brittle, or thin. Heat compromises the hair’s protective cuticle layer, releasing precious moisture. This can make hair look dull and frizzy, or in some cases, cause it to break off altogether. However, sometimes it’s nice to change up your look with curls, especially if you have a special occasion coming up. The solution? No-heat curls!
While there are many ways to curl hair without heat, we think these three methods are the easiest heat-free ways to curl hair. Keep reading for our favourite no-heat curling methods!
Method One: Headband Curls
If you’re looking for loose, beachy waves, this method is for you.
To start, wash and condition hair using Viviscal Gorgeous Growth Densifying Shampoo
. Allow hair to air dry until it’s slightly damp, then brush through to make sure there are no tangles. Next, place a stretchy fabric headband around your head so that it circles your crown and forehead. Working in small sections, wrap your hair around the headband. The tighter you wrap the hair, the smaller your waves will be.
Leave hair in the headband until it’s fully dry, or overnight. Once hair is dry, unwrap hair from the headband, and brush lightly for loose, glamorous waves.

Method Two: Rag Curls
This no-heat curling method is basically free since most people have an old rag or cotton t-shirt that they can use to create rag curls.
First, cut a clean dish rag or old cotton t-shirt into strips. One-inch strips will create tight curls, while wider strips will make looser curls. For best results, start with clean, brushed, slightly damp hair. Separate a 1-inch section of your hair, then lay the strip across the bottom of the section, lining up the strip edge with the bottom tips of your hair. Roll the strip upwards towards your scalp, twisting your hair around the strip. Then, tie the ends of the strip together to hold the curl in place. Remember: wherever you tie the strip is where your curls will begin.
Repeat this in sections until all your hair is tied up into strips. Allow your hair to dry completely, or sleep in the rag curls overnight. Once your hair is dry, untie the strips and gently finger-comb hair to separate the curls.
Method Three: Heatless Hair Curlers
Don’t have any t-shirts or rags that you want to sacrifice in the name of no-heat curls? Then, this curling method is for you.
Visit your local beauty supply store for sponge or foam rollers. Remember: the smaller the roller, the tighter the curl, so pick a size based on how tight you’d like your curls to be.
Find heat-free foam rollers at any drugstore or beauty supply store
Start with clean, slightly damp hair. For extra body, apply a small amount Viviscal Gorgeous Growth Densifying Elixir
and use a wide-tooth comb to distribute the product evenly. Using a comb, separate a 1- to 2-inch section from the rest of your hair. Comb through the section to ensure that it’s smooth with no tangles. Place a curler at the bottom of the section of hair, then roll up towards the roots and secure. Repeat with the rest of your hair.
Wait at least one hour while your hair finishes drying, or preferably overnight. Once hair is completely dry, unroll hair and gently separate the curls with your fingers.
